I am remarkably proud to work closely on my journey to sustainability with a team of what I like to call my Sustained Beauty Partners.  These are wonderful companies that are making strides on their path to sustainability and leading the effort for our industry by setting high standards for themsleves first.

A great example of this effort is the Davines Manifesto which I am so pleased to be able to present to you in two parts.  When you read this you will certainly begin to understand why I feel so strongly about working with this fine organization and the caring, progressive individuals that work for them.

Please visit the Davines website to learn more – their vision and dedication is impressive and their products support that vision wholly.

The Davines Sustainable Beauty Manifesto – Part I

From: the Davines International Team

Submitted by: John Cutrone with Davines through PSC

First of all, our concept of sustainable beauty does not represent what we are at the moment but rather what we want to become. Although we have done many things that are in agreement with this concept, we still feel that there is a lot of work ahead of us to gain the genuine recognition of being a company that fully and consistently represents both beauty and sustainability / style and substance.

Therefore, Davines recently developed our Sustainable Beauty Manifesto, which now serves as the reference point, as the source of inspiration and guideline for all our ongoing and future initiatives.

As a first major step towards our Sustainable Beauty vision we are concentrating our efforts at creating our own working environment to be beautiful and sustainable, and progressively share the experiences and activities with others each time we feel we are a step closer to this vision. With “others” we really mean everybody – including salon clients, customers, distributors, suppliers, competitors, our children and even people in general that will never know about Davines.

BEAUTY

The word “cosmetics” comes from the Greek word Kosmos, which means “the correct order of things”, something that is reflected in the surface but that was born from a deep equilibrium between substance and shape, between contents and their expression.

Our ideal of beauty finds inspiration in this concept… We want to create things that may have an impact not only on the surface of people but also on their emotions, quality of life and their well-being. Through our products and projects we want to create “beauty” that helps to:

  • Promote respect and appreciation for individuality – Davines spirit is very much driven by the freedom we give to our emotions, ideas and values to express themselves in all we do. We respect and appreciate the individuality of every person, and consider our products and projects as simply being tools and sources of inspiration for others to improve their professional and/or personal lives. One example could be that of our Styling Line DEFINING – each Defining product contains on the packaging the Latin phrase, “HOMO FABER FORTUNAE SUAE” (which means ‘Each man defines his own destiny’). The phrase is an invitation to find the necessary strength to fight for what you want to achieve or what you want to become.
  • Promote a lifestyle based simply on the quality of daily activities – that is to promote a way of life that encourages people to enjoy the things we do every day both personally and professionally. In the next section, when we discuss what Sustainability means for us, we will talk a little bit about what specifically we try to do to create the environment to facilitate the enjoyment of the things we do every day.
  • Promote well-being: encourage people to take care of themselves, of the environment and of the people they love. Certainly our Well-Being Space is an example where we try to bring beauty to the hair and well-being to the people, but our initiative to promote well-being goes well beyond this space – it is an initiative very much present in all company-wide projects that relate to sustainable beauty.
  • Promote harmony – To speak about beauty is to speak about harmony and this would result as we master all previously mentioned points and reach harmony. Culturally, our world of beauty is borderless and one in which we balance the Italian lifestyle with Multicultural perspectives.

Please stay tuned…Part II of the Davines Sustainable Beauty Manifesto tomorrow
